When you’re feeling stressed your body is in the emergency “fight, freeze or flight” mode. It goes into varying degrees and intensities of this state whenever you’re feeling any negative emotion. While you are in this emergency state, certain changes happen biologically and neurologically.

Stress chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol flood your bloodstream; blood is pumped away from your organs to your extremities, your heart rate increases, and certain systems are minimized or shut down completely.

Why do We Think Our Worst Thoughts When We’re Stressed?

Impaired Thinking

One of the systems that is affected by this state is your cognitive thinking. Because activity in your prefrontal cortex is reduced, you are not able to think as clearly as you do when you are in a calm state. Your ability to reason and use logic, your problem-solving skills, and your ability to see solutions and analyse are all impacted when you are in the fight, freeze or flight state.

Vicious Cycle

In addition to this, the stress chemicals cause a feeling of anxiety; and since the job of the conscious mind is to give reason and logic to how you feel, it gives meaning to these feelings. It will come up with matching thoughts for those feelings. Those thoughts trigger more of the same chemicals, and those chemicals trigger more of the same thoughts. And so it becomes a cycle that can be very difficult to break.

Why Affirmations and Reasoning Don’t Work

Using the conscious mind to reason with the bad thoughts, or to use affirmations is not very effective because the body is already in the emergency fight or flight state. This state overrides conscious thinking – it has to as it’s designed for survival. The most effective way to stop the cycle of bad thoughts is to use FasterEFT to clear them. Because FasterEFT works with the subconscious mind and the original causes of the stress, it can go where the conscious mind can’t. It can go to the operating system and change that.

The stress response is triggered by the brain in response to the subconscious prompting it. And the subconscious is prompting it based on the records it holds – the “proof” of reality based on key past experiences. Change the record, and the subconscious will not trigger that response.

How to Stop the Cycle of Negative Thinking and Feeling

Step One

When you find yourself thinking negative thoughts, notice how you feel. The earlier in the process you do this the better since it’s easier to stop the cycle early on than once it is in full swing. So, as soon as you notice you’re thinking negatively, notice the feeling. Notice what it feels like, where in your body you feel it, and how strong it is. Just notice.

Step Two:

Using two fingers, and focusing on the feeling of your fingertips on your skin, gently tap the following points while saying the phrases:

– Between your eyebrows – “I release and let this go.”

– Beside your eye – “It’s okay to let this go now.”

– Under your eye – “It’s safe to let this go.”

– Just below your collarbone – “I don’t need it anymore, and I’m safe as I’m letting it go.”

Step Three:

Grab your wrist, take a deep breath, blow it out, and say “Peace” then go to a peaceful memory. Enjoy that feeling of your peaceful memory for a moment.

Step Four:

Go back to the negative thoughts, and notice what’s different. Notice what thoughts are still there, and what feelings are left. Then repeat Steps Two through Four until the bad feelings have completely changed to good ones.

While you are going through the process, you may find that certain memories and other thoughts come to you – tap on them as well. Make sure that all negative feelings are replaced with positive ones, and that all memories have flipped before you stop.

Continue to use this process every time you find yourself feeling stressed or having negative thoughts – use it in the moment. If you are unable to tap physically, use the Mental Tapping technique. The more you do this, the more you’re cleaning out the old connections – and you will start to see changes in your habitual thinking and your levels of calm instead of stress.
